Yes, you can set your status to appear invisible when using the Google Talk gadget or Gmail’s chat feature. While signed in as ‘Invisible,’ you’ll appear offline to your contacts. But there are many cool techniques to detect if a user is in fact offline or just invisible .
Login Gtalk Using Gtalk Desktop Gadget ( this trick may not work when you use Gmail for chat ) So its better you try Gtalk Online Gadget or Desktop Gadget.
After Login Click on the name of the person you want to check invisibility and there choose ‘Go off the record‘.
Type message in the chat window for your friend and press enter. Now if a message in Red appears in the window saying ‘This person is curently offline and cant receive your messages right now.’, then this means that your friend is really offline. However, is such a message is not displayed, then it is clear that your friend is online but is just appearing offline to you.
